Description
LocalSend is a free, open-source application that allows you to transfer files, folders, and text messages between devices on the same local network.
Think of it as a universal, cross-platform version of Apple’s AirDrop or Google’s Quick Share. It doesn’t require the internet, accounts, or cloud servers, making it incredibly fast and private.
Key Features
Cross-Platform: Works on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
No Internet Needed: Transfers happen over your local Wi-Fi or LAN.
Privacy-Focused: Data is end-to-end encrypted and never leaves your home network.
Open Source: The code is public, ensuring there are no hidden trackers or ads.
No File Limits: You can send massive files or entire folders without hitting a “cloud storage” cap.
How to Use LocalSend
1. Setup
Download: Install the app on both the sending and receiving devices. You can get it from the official website, the App Store, or Google Play.
Connect: Ensure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Launch: Open the app on both devices. You will see a randomly generated “alias” for each device (e.g., Gorgeous Blueberry or Energetic Pumpkin).
2. Sending Files
On the sender device, go to the Send tab.
Select what you want to share: File, Media (photos/videos), Text, or even App (on Android).
Choose the files you wish to transfer.
A list of Nearby Devices will appear. Tap the name of the device you want to send to.
3. Receiving Files
On the receiver device, a popup will appear asking to accept the transfer.
Tap Accept.
The file will download directly to your “Downloads” or “LocalSend” folder.
Pro-Tip: If you frequently send files between your own devices, go to Settings on the receiving device and enable Quick Save. This will automatically accept transfers from your trusted devices without a prompt.
