Google Authenticator

Varies with device
Google Authenticator adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by adding a second step of verification when you sign in. This means that in addition to your password, you'll also need to enter a code that is generated by the Google Authenticator app on your phone. The verification code can be generated by the Google Authenticator app on your phone, even if you don't have a network or cellular connection.

Description

Google Authenticator is a free security app that provides an extra layer of protection for your online accounts. It generates a unique, 6-digit code every 30 seconds that you must enter alongside your password when logging in. This process is called Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

Why use it?
Protection against hackers: Even if someone steals your password, they cannot access your account without the physical device that generates the code.

No Internet needed: The app generates codes locally on your phone, so it works even if you are offline or in “Airplane Mode.”

Safer than SMS: Text message codes can be intercepted through “SIM swapping.” Google Authenticator is much more secure because it stays on your device.

How to set it up (Step-by-Step)
1. Download the App
Install Google Authenticator from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

2. Enable 2FA on your Account
Go to the security settings of the account you want to protect (e.g., Google, Facebook, Amazon, or Instagram). Look for “Two-Step Verification” or “Multi-Factor Authentication.” Choose the option to use an “Authenticator App.”

3. Link the Account
A QR code will appear on your computer screen.

Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone.

Tap the “+” (plus) icon.

4. Verify the Link
The app will immediately start showing a 6-digit code for that account. Type that code into the website on your computer to confirm the setup is complete.

Key Tips for 2026
Google Account Sync: You can now sign in to the app with your Google Account to sync your codes to the cloud. This ensures you don’t lose access if you lose your phone.

Privacy Screen: You can enable “Privacy Screen” in the app settings, which requires your Face ID, fingerprint, or PIN to open the app.

Backup Codes: Always save the “Backup Codes” provided by websites during setup. If you ever lose your phone and haven’t synced your account, these codes are the only way to get back in.

How to use it daily

The next time you log in to a secured account:

Enter your username and password as usual.

The site will ask for a verification code.

Open Google Authenticator, find the code for that site, and type it in before the timer (the little blue circle) runs out.
